4 TIPS TO GET BACK INTO TRAINING

If you’re in the process of getting back into training after a long absence, first of all, welcome back!

Perhaps you experienced an injury that took you away from working out and now you’ve recovered. Or maybe you’ve gone through a rough patch, and now you’re ready to get back to working out.

No matter the reason that you had to take a step back, there are a few tips we can offer for getting back into a regular training routine.

1. TRAIN LIKE A BEGINNER.

When you first learn new movements as a beginner, there are a few things that happen. Beginners are very focused on skill and technique. They don’t lift a whole lot of weight, and they give their bodies a chance to adapt before progressing their training. We recommend a similar thought pattern for those who are getting back into raining.

We’re not discounting what you’ve learned or accomplished in the past. However, while you’re getting back into things, you’re more likely to be successful with a long-term habit if you adopt the mindset of a beginner.

2. RAMP UP GRADUALLY.

Echoing in the sentiment in Tip #1, we also recommend that you gradually ramp up your training. It’s easy to ease back into training for the first week or two and then assume that you’re good. If you try to accelerate your workout intensity, this could lead to overtraining, loss of motivation, or injury.

Continue to listen to your body and err on the side of holding yourself back. Avoid doing too much too soon.

3. BE PATIENT.

Once you’re back in a regular routine, it’s easy to expect results (weight loss, better fitting clothes, more energy) to happen immediately. And then when you do not see the results that you expect, you start to feel frustrated. Motivation and drive start to dwindle.

When you’re getting back to training, start with realistic expectations and goals. If one of your goals is to lose weight, make your goal more specific and also create a reasonable timeline for your goal.

4. BE SAFE.

Anytime you’re changing your workout routine, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor first. Once you have the go ahead, it’s also a good idea to follow a program designed by a knowledgable coach or personal trainer.
